BA (Hons) Art Histories and Curatorial Practices: Asia and the World launch symposium

This academic workshop on curatorial agency and innovations in the field of art history brings together key voices across Asia and the world for a robust discussion to set the tone for the programme. Interactive presentations by four curators – Özge Ersoy, Senior Curator at Asia Art Archive, addressing archival creativity; Karin Oen, Head of Art History at Nanyang Technological University, imagining institutional creativity; Shubigi Rao, independent artist and writer who represented Singapore in the 2022 Venice Biennale, exemplifying narratological creativity; and Moses Tan, enabler at artist-run space starch in Singapore, manifesting organisational creativity – will ground open dialogue with workshop participants.

Danish performance artist Sophie Dupont presents a solo durational performance by moving slowly and quietly across LASALLE's McNally Campus over a span of 12 hours to compose an abstract score, etched on a copper plate and shaped by the near-invisible and hardly simple act of breathing, towards calling attention to presence and wellness.

Performed by Sophie Dupont, Do You Breathe? How Do You Feel? is developed for the programme launch on the occasion of the artist’s first visit to Singapore. The work exemplifies the artist’s research into finding common ground with fellow human beings – for this event, with media artist Urich Lau and movement artist Elizabeth de Roza – by calling attention to the fundamental process of being alive through breathing.

Danish artist Molly Haslund – together with volunteer participants in Singapore gathered through Critical Craft Collective – will stage a durational performance that creates the silent and calming image of a shared resting and living social body. Like cells in an organism, the performance echoes ecological resonances in environmental sustainability, ending with a collective reflection of the entire launch over a simple catered picnic.
