McNally Award for Excellence in the Arts

Named after LASALLE’s founder, Brother Joseph McNally, the McNally Award for Excellence in the Arts is awarded to the most outstanding BA (Hons) student of each year’s graduating cohort.

It recognises an artist's role in society, academic excellence and significant contribution to their professional and social communities. The recipient of this award demonstrates significant promise as an emerging practitioner in their respective creative field.

Mitchell Hoo Min Cher

Mitchell Hoo is a multidisciplinary fashion researcher-practitioner whose work explores the intersections of politics, culture and the body. Through photography, editorial and curation, he investigates how fashion shapes identity, power and the stories societies tell about themselves.

His final-year dissertation and graduation project contributed new perspectives to fashion scholarship by examining law, morality, citizenship and identity through fashion. His work has since been published, exhibited and recognised internationally on platforms like PhMuseum and Blurring The Lines.

Alongside his research, Mitchell served as editorial director of Neither/Nor: Fashioning the In-Between—developed in collaboration with the Fashion Institute of Technology—a publication that showcased the rich heritage and craft of Southeast Asia.

Mitchell’s practice is guided by an enduring curiosity about fashion as a political and economic force, underpinned by the belief that critical inquiry can contribute to a more thoughtful and equitable society. He hopes to continue this line of inquiry through postgraduate studies in political science with the goal of shaping policy-making for the creative industries.
