Event details

Join the McNally School of Fine Arts for a sneak peek into Dr Brianne Cohen’s forthcoming book The Empathic Lens: Art, Animism, and Ecology in Contemporary Southeast Asia which explores how artists respond to climate disaster and capitalist acceleration by cultivating empathy toward the environment, with a focus on photography and video works from Vietnam, Cambodia and Singapore.

Drawing on indigenous land relations, environmental justice and traditions of human–nonhuman interdependency, Brianne’s talk will trace genealogies of empathy and animism to show how such artworks offer sustainable visions for future planetary coexistence.

Whether you are interested in critical historiography, climate justice or ecological transformation, all are welcome!

About the speaker
Dr Brianne Cohen is Associate Professor of Art History at the University of Colorado Boulder, specialising in contemporary art, visual culture and socio-environmental justice.
