Singapore is projected to become a super-aged society in 2026. As seen in other countries who have crossed this threshold, increased longevity is accompanied by greater healthcare burdens and rising demands on social care systems.
Yet, ageing can also be perceived as a golden phase in life where one has accumulated enough wisdom and experience to face the tribulations of life with calmness and quiet confidence. How can we shift from the perception of an ageing society as a problem to solve, to reimagining ageless societies where taboos and stereotypes are challenged?
This exhibition features ethnographic photography works by students from the BA (Hons) Design for Social Futures programme. Emerging from community fieldwork with different senior groups, these works explore what it means to age in Singapore.
The exhibition dives into issues of caregiving, health, retirement, mobility, family relationships and social connections, seeking to expand perspectives on ageing, living and dying.
Ageless Stories is the culmination of a semester-long module led by Alecia Neo and Jessica Wong, supported by Kavitha Krishnan and Wendy Chua. This project is made possible with the support of our community partners Hack Kopitiam, MAYA Dance Theatre and Movement SG, as well as the many kind individuals who have welcomed our students into their gathering places.
