Course details
This course is a beginner-level introduction to Irish dancing, suitable for learners with little or no previous experience in Irish dance. The course will focus on building a strong foundation in basic Irish dance technique, movement vocabulary, rhythm and musical awareness before progressing to dance sequences.
Learners will be introduced to correct posture, foot and body positioning, basic Irish dance movements, and basic exercises to develop balance, coordination, strength and flexibility. Emphasis will be placed on learning and practising each movement slowly and clearly before combining movements into short sequences.
Learners will be introduced to two basic Irish dance rhythms: the Reel and Light Jig. They will learn to recognise the difference between the two rhythms and practise simple beginner movements to each type of music.
The course will also provide an introduction to Ceili dancing, allowing students to experience Irish social dancing through partner and group movements. By the end of the course, learners will have developed a basic understanding of Irish dancing and will be able to perform simple movements and a short beginner-level dance sequence individually and/or as part of a group.
Note on course progression
The pace and progression of the course may be adjusted according to the students’ prior experience, ability and learning pace. Additional time may be given to foundational movements and skills where needed before progressing to more advanced sequences.
