Course details
This course invites you to reconnect with the process of writing and discover how lettering can be used to convey emotion and meaning. Beginning with an introduction to the history of Western calligraphy, you will explore how traditional tools and brushes shaped the development of letterforms over time.
Using simple pencil exercises, you will construct foundational shapes and understand the principles behind classical scripts. From there, the course moves into modern brush lettering, showing how traditional techniques can inform contemporary styles. You will experiment with varying strokes, rhythm and composition, and learn to design your own lettering pieces in a systematic way.
By the end of the course, you will have a deeper appreciation of calligraphy across different forms, greater confidence in analysing and adapting existing scripts, and the skills to use words visually to tell your own personal stories.

Chinese Calligraphy: History and Art
This foundational course explores the historical evolution and cultural significance of Chinese calligraphy, tracing its origins from ancient China to its modern influence on artistic expression. Students will gain a comprehensive understanding of how this revered art form developed through different dynasties, studying iconic calligraphers such as Wang Xizhi and Zhang Xu and their contributions to various script styles. Ceramics for Absolute Beginners I, II, III & IV
Use clay to form objects that are both functional and non-functional. Techniques covered in Level I include pinching, coiling and slab construction. Levels II and III focus on wheel-throwing techniques. The prerequisite for Level II and above courses is the completion of the previous level or prior experience. Applicants who wish to join Level II and above and have prior experience in ceramics are required to submit artworks for the trainer’s review. Applicants with no prior experience are encouraged to start from Level I. Note: Course trainers are, on occasion, subject to change with short notice.
Chinese Ink Painting: Further Ink Work
Landscape painting is regarded as the highest form of Chinese ink painting. In this course, participants will work on large pieces of artwork with a focus on painting various landscapes and surrounding objects with accuracy. This course is suitable for those who have completed Chinese Ink Painting level XV and/or professional artists who are looking to deepen their techniques in landscape painting.
